I’ve just finished this one and wow. What a beautiful and insightful look into grief and the different ways to navigate it!

I loved that we were seeing Sage’s Dad mirroring what she was going through, as he tried to help her navigate her grief through his own. I also really loved the use of passports stamps to share the different stages of grief and how Sage was feeling. I’m going to donate this copy to our school library because I think it is such a gentle and accessible way to help little people understand.

Lorkin has beautifully captured the emotional pendulum of grief, as well as the importance of support and meaningful connection as a cornerstone to integrating difficult experiences.

Coupled with Lorkin’s beautiful illustrations and journaling prompts, Sage and the Journey of Grief is an invaluable resource for children, their families and carers, and schools alike.

There’s a beautiful sense of warmth and compassion that flows through this story. The writing moves through emotions of sadness and joy with maturity and confidence - always with a clear focus on its intended purpose of equipping young readers with the vocabulary and frameworks to describe and understand their emotions.

Meet The Author

Liv Lorkin

Liv is the second generation of motherless daughters. Her mum lost her mother at seven and Liv lost her mum at one. Grief is no stranger to her and through authentic storytelling she wants her readers to feel less alone.

Growing up she found joy in her imagination and creativity. Making up worlds, drawing out of the lines and bringing fun stories to life.

Sage and the Journey of Grief is Liv’s debut novel. While she shares many similarities with Sage their lives are unique and separate.

Liv resides in Wollongong with her husband, Anthony and their little dog, Gracie. When she isn’t illustrating on Dharawal land she can be found exploring gardens, finishing a good puzzle and drinking her third cup of tea.
